May Book Wrap-Up

So… uh… May was a busy month. High school was coming to a close, and there was almost no time to read. However, one thing I had on my high school bucket list was to read all the volumes of Nana our school library had; but I only sort-of completed this goal. Let’s get started, and as always, SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!!

Nana (Vol 1-6)- Ai Yazawa

First of all, the reason I was interested in this series is because I heard it was Yuri. Going in with that assumption, I really enjoyed the first couple volumes! Both Nanas clearly had a lot of trouble with the men in their lives, and I found how their relationships played out really thoughtful. The art was gorgeous, and besides all their drama with men, the relationship between both Nanas evolved so naturally- they were falling in love! However, when I got to volume 6, I started getting confused. I assumed the series was a slow burn, but it felt a little too slow… their plots still revolved around other men at that point! So I decided to search up which volume both Nanas get together.

And guess what I found.

Yep, they never get together. The real yuri was the friends we made along the way. I can’t believe I got queerbaited by a series that’s more than 15 years old. Anyways, this entire situation kind of pissed me off, but that was mainly my fault for going in with the wrong expectation. But the fact that I was convinced they were falling in love for six whole volumes really says a lot about how strangely their relationship was written. Well, that’s it for this month of reading, and I can say that in June, it gets a whole lot better!
