Mr. Robot

This was such a goofy show. Computer science is not an area of interest for me, so I never expected I would be this entertained by a show about cybersecurity and hacking. I just finished watching the first season of Mr. Robot on Netflix, and even though it was really technical and computer science heavy, I found it so entertaining. I feel like the show makes really good use of an unreliable narrator; that’s a really good technique to keep the viewer guessing at all times. I don’t even want to reveal some of the plot twists at the end, because it’s something you have to watch for your self. The premise of the show itself is really scary. One corporation running the entire world, a sort of capitalist nightmare. And only Mr. Robot’s team of hackers can bring it on. This premise is also more relatable to people who are not completely into computer science, so that’s another reason why I probably enjoyed it. I’d also like to say that Rami Malek, as Elliot, is just such a good actor. He really sells the unstable hacker-hermit character. And I guess Christian Slater ended up with the same role he played in Heathers, a guy who seems crazy at first, then actually starts to become a good character, but then is revealed to have been psychotic all along.

Season 1 was great. Right now, I’m on the fourth episode of Season 2 and I have no idea what’s going on. It’s mostly just talking, so I can’t really follow what’s going on in the post Evil Corporation world. Elliot as a character still remains the best part of the series though. So even if you are not a fan of computer science, this is a well-roundedly (I made that word up) nerdy TV show. Give it a try!

Update: Season 1 is a 7/10.
