Thunderbolts

Is it weird that I didn’t like this movie all that much? I’ve only heard good things about Thunderbolts, the new Marvel movie. Apparently Marvel is back to making quality movies; the days of the multiverse are behind us! I definitely agree that Thunderbolts is an improvement, but I don’t think it holds up as a phenomenal movie on its own.

First of all though, Florence Pugh is serious superhero material as Yelena. She is such a good actor and easily the best part of the movie. But the actor who played the Sentry definitely comes close. He was an interesting character and the most unique thing the movie does story-wise. Also, I love his dynamic with Yelena! It is an awesome basis for a friendship.

But other than that? I’m not sure how I feel. The movie was definitely a metaphor for depression, but I feel like that is a subject that could have been explored further. I get that its a Marvel movie and has to be funny, but the awkward jokes in the beginning could have been switched for character development. I haven’t really watched the previous Marvel movies, so I don’t have background knowledge about the Ghost and the U.S. Agent, but I feel like their personalities should have been developed better for new viewers.

Additionally, the villain makes no sense. I have no idea who she is, what’s her backstory, and why she is so terrible at being a villain in general. What did she think was going to happen, trying to control the Sentry? Of course he was going to go Homelander on everyone (though his personality is clearly nothing like Homelander’s)! And how on Earth did she not get arrested at the end of the movie? She literally killed depressed people with shady human experimentation!

This movie was ok… and that’s about it. A good one time watch, but I’ll probably forget about it a week from now. 6/10!
